Toxic Salmon: Farm-Raised Versus Wild Salmon
I feel that salmon is hands-down the most nutritious fish on the market. It’s delicious and nutritious, can be prepared SO many different ways, is very anti-aging for your skin, and can actually help you to lose fat!
Controversy surrounds this delicious fish, and it centers around where the salmon comes from. The terms you’ve probably heard are “farmed-salmon” and “wild-caught”.
But what’s the difference? Does it even really matter? The answer is a firm YES. Wild Salmon are free to make the trek up-stream they are famous for – out to the ocean, back up the stream – you know the drill. They get more exercise; they eat the stuff salmon is supposed to eat. They can possibly contain trace amounts of mercury – but after you read what I’m about to tell you next, this will be the least of your worries!
Farmed Salmon, on the other hand, hang out in little pens where their muscles atrophy. They’re fed pellets with pink food coloring, because they’re actually gray in color instead of that bright peach color that they’re suppose to be from building their muscles swimming up-stream. They actually put dye into the fish so that we will eat it. Can you believe that?
Farmed Salmon are fatty, and the pellets they’re fed are FULL of toxic Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).
PCBs are a cocktail of over 200 chlorinated compounds that are also used as lubricants in electrical equipment. The manufacture of PCBs was banned in the US way back in 1979! PCBs are stored in fat, so fatty farmed Salmon are straight up chock full of this stuff. PCBs are *known* to cause cancer and all kinds of other diseases.
So, what can you do to make sure you are eating the best, most healthy fish?
- Make sure it says “wild” on it, if it doesn’t say it, then it isn’t. If it says “Atlantic Salmon” that fish has never seen the Atlantic.
- Use frozen wild-caught salmon if you can’t find fresh
- Canned wild salmon is a good alternative too
- Get your wild salmon delivered by mail if you can’t get it in your area
Salmon is an amazingly healthy food. It really is. As long as you are careful about where it comes from, it’s a great source of Omega-3′s and like your mom always says, “Fish is brain food!” It’s true. It can actually replenish the serotonin in your brain, which is the chemical that makes you happy.
